“Happy?” Isn’t What It Sounds Like Citizen Rat Just Exposed the Burnout No One Talks About

Brisbane’s punk/metal agitators Citizen Rat return swinging with “Happy?,” a volatile, brutally honest track that tears into the illusion of success and the mental toll of chasing it. Blending punk aggression with alt-rock edge and post-punk tension, the band delivers a track that feels as chaotic as the world it critiques.

Written by frontman Dartanyon Hutchison and guitarist Brendan Statham, “Happy?” dives deep into creative burnout, self-doubt, and the exhausting grind of modern musicianship. It captures the pressure of constantly feeding the content machine while fighting to be seen, a cycle that pushes passion to its breaking point. Hutchison’s lyricism walks a razor’s edge between sharp wit and emotional collapse, turning lines like “I’m happy, at least that’s how I seem” into something both ironic and unsettlingly real.

Musically, the track hits hard and doesn’t let up. Raging riffs, relentless drums, and explosive vocal delivery drive the intensity, while moments of vulnerability cut through the noise with precision. A wild, off-kilter guitar solo and a chant-worthy hook add to the controlled chaos, making “Happy?” as infectious as it is confrontational.

Produced by Jordan Bain and mastered by King Willy, the track balances raw energy with clarity, ensuring every punch lands with force. As the final release from this era of the band, “Happy?” stands as a defining statement, a snapshot of a group pushing themselves to the edge and refusing to fake a smile while doing it.

Citizen Rat aren’t here to play it safe, and “Happy?” makes that impossible to ignore.

Biography

Born from the ashes of some of Queensland’s finest underground acts, and doused in raw energy and relentless passion, Citizen Rat is a punk/metal force emerging from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Their sound fuses blistering riffs, chaotic intensity, and anthemic hooks with lyrics that cut deep. If Fugazi and The Bronx had a love child raised on self-doubt, resilience, and Introspection, it would sound like this.

Citizen Rat has spent the last two years tearing apart and rebuilding their sound. Refining their craft through relentless live shows and writing sessions with Tom Eggert (Sony) and Jai Sparks (Hello Gardener), they’ve honed a sound that’s aggressive, cathartic, and undeniably their own. Now, teaming up with Jordan Bain at Airlock Studios, they’ve captured something powerful, melding punk urgency with modern metal weight, all while pushing their songwriting to new heights.

Onstage, Citizen Rat is a spectacle, explosive, unpredictable, and immersive. Their high-energy performances have left a lasting impact, whether headlining Solbar, tearing through QLD’s Rotten Fest, or sharing stages with Civic, Hoon, Total Pace, Fangz, Being Jane Lane and Fake News. Their sound is as bold as their aesthetic, bright, vibrant, and layered with intricacies that contrast their raw intensity. This duality runs deep in everything they do, balancing chaos with clarity, aggression with melody, and a sense of urgency with moments of eerie calm.

With a string of new singles dropping throughout 2025, leading into their debut LP, Citizen Rat is on the cusp of something big. A new era is here, louder, Sharper, and impossible to ignore.
