APNEA Releases New EP ‘Beyond City Limits’

After releasing their acclaimed debut album ‘Sea Sound’ in 2022, the band returns with a new album in partnership with producer Muriel Curi.

APNEA returns with a new album, the EP 'Beyond City Limits', recorded at Dissenso Studio in São Paulo. For this album, they made a point of working with a woman on the production team, inviting Muriel Curi, who produced and mixed the EP's four songs. Fernando Sanchez handled the mastering.

Drummer Maurício Boka shares the composition process and his work with Muriel Curi:

"We already had the four songs ready, as I mentioned before, so when we thought about making an EP, we wanted to record in a different studio with a broader range of resources. We also looked for a producer. We thought a woman would have a different interpretation and perspective on how we think about music, a different sensibility. When Muriel Curi, who runs Dissenso Studio, came up, we didn't hesitate, and the result was wonderful."

'Beyond City Limits' represents a growth in both songwriting and performance, as well as production and overall quality.

"We're a band that rehearses frequently and composes constantly. With the four songs already well-developed, we realized that an EP after the debut album would be a good idea. In terms of discography, we thought that releasing a single, an album, and an EP would 'complete' all types of conventional release formats within our trajectory to date," says Maurício Boka.

This work is the band's heaviest, showcasing their evolution and establishing their identity on the national scene. With a vision of presenting a sound influenced by the music of the 70s and 90s, blending grunge, heavy metal, and stoner rock, APNEA built its sound with diverse influences.

"The sound became heavier and more 'rock' than on the album," says Maurício Boka. "And the lyrics are quite subjective. They address themes like the environment, class struggle, everyday life, the city of Santos, etc., but in an indirect and somewhat psychedelic way. I think that just reading some of the lyrics makes it difficult to understand the message directly, and it can sound like a total 'trip.' We also want people to know and understand the sound. We'd like to expand our music as far as possible. The quality of the production and compositions reflect a new era, a step above."

After months of work, APNEA released their debut album ‘Sea Sound’ in September 2022, earning praise from specialized media and accumulating thousands of streams and fans around the world. The album reached second place in the Album of the Year vote by the American website Metal Has no Borders, also being featured on websites such as Metal Injection, Bass Magazine, Guitarload, Wikimetal, Diário de S.Paulo and HEAVY.

Formed in 2019 in Santos, São Paulo – the birthplace of major Brazilian underground names – APNEA emerged when Mauricio Boka invited Marcus Vinicius to share the ideas he'd had in mind for a long time and test the development of a style and sonic identity. After a few jam sessions, they recruited guitarist Nando Zambeli, and their musical language began to take shape more clearly. Bassist Gabriel Imakawa joined the quartet, which began rehearsing frequently, composing and refining the band's style.

In August 2020, APNEA entered the studio to record their first songs, which were released in 2021 on the EP "Salt Water." The material was recorded in Santos at Electro Sound Studio, run by Marcão Britto (ex-Charlie Brown Jr.). Production, mixing, and mastering were handled by André Freitas. In September 2022, they released their long-awaited debut album, "Sea Sound," also recorded at Electro Sound Studio, led by André Freitas. Mixing and mastering were handled by Fernando Sanches.

The band is currently performing shows throughout Brazil in support of their new EP, "Beyond City Limits"
